SAGE*, a youth group from the Iron Triangle neighborhood, conceived of a brilliant and simple concept: the YELLOW BRICK ROAD. Their idea is to stencil something akin to yellow bricks on roads and sidewalks of the Iron Triangle neighborhood to designate “safe routes” for children and families to walk -- and then use the YELLOW BRICK ROAD to connect key community assets.

  1. *  SAGE members were recruited by Cheryl Maier, Executive Director of Opportunity West, a nonprofit organization that serves the Iron Triangle neighborhood.

We at Pogo Park are a enthusiastic and ardent supporters of this brilliant and visionary idea.

Below is an ariel view of the Iron Triangle neighborhood that shows some of the neighborhood’s key assets (Peres Elementary School, Lucas Park, Elm Playlot, Nevin Park, Kaiser Hospital, and BART). There are other key assets not shown (East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Brookside Community Health Center, churches etc.); we hope that the first leg of the Yellow Brick Road can connect Elm Playlot to Peres Elementary School, four blocks away.
